Charles Dickens
But there was little indication of the "J" that would follow...
LOG ALERT - CHARLES DICKENS
3 hours of overhead lined up walls running down the reef from the rock all the way to the pistons with hardly a soul and no other loggers for the first half of the session. Long, long, long noserides intermixed with the occasional and inadvertent cover up including an accidental double b.
Oh Katia, you sexy storm. Thank you for your gentle embrace.

What are you bombing?
After a great 2 hour session of some real bombs (note: the big set waves here usually break inside that outer reef that this wave is breaking over) I got caught inside the bay and when attempting to duck dive a close out my board was ripped from my hands & my leash snapped. After getting sucked south and out again by a rip and after a 10 wave set, I finally swam in to find my board broken into a dozen pieces. The inside waves breaking against the rocks were so vicious I couldn't even recover the broken pieces. RIP 5'8" Pod.
And then there were three...

Irene Wreaks Havoc on Plans
What was supposed to be a one night visit, turned into a 4 day ordeal as Hurricane Irene formed over Vieques and left the roads of la Isla Nena impassable, the faucets dry and the lights off. By Monday, there wasn't even any ice left to keep the Medallas cold and all flight plans had to be delayed. Now that order is restoring on the islands, we must see where Irene lands next before making a new flight plan. But we will fly before too long.

Is Quik going to Kill NY's Aloha?
An interesting Op Ed piece from the NY Times...
"Artists, writers and others in trend-conscious fields are plugged in to New York’s surf scene."
Translation - fashionistas have taken to surfing.
"When New York City surfers cross paths, they greet one another, exchange notes...Anyone who has surfed in Santa Cruz or Huntington Beach — chilly, xenophobic “surf cities” — knows how exceptional this urban aloha is."
Translation - my NY surfing fashionista friends are nice to me. Since we don't live by the beach, we clue each other in to where the surf is on LI. When I travel, nobody dials me in to their local spots.
"The corporate siren song threatens to sour the mood of surfing in New York, which for the moment remains a bastion of surf spirit."
Umm, has this guy been to Montauk??? Has he seen the proliferation of coffee table surf books? The Surf Lodge? The battle for the DitchWitch? What about the Quiksilver store in Times Square?
"It’s not hard to imagine New York’s urban aloha going the way of its Polynesian progenitor, but for the moment a genial, just-folks atmosphere reigns."
Translation - shh. Now that we know where to surf, don't tell anybody else that there are waves here. Locals only.

Get on the bus

Those who know say that this Bonnaroo was the best ever - the culmination of 10 years of curation, cultivation, and pervasive magnification.
Please take a minute and check out this photographer's photo essay and take a look for yourself as Sr. Kravitz captured many of the finest moments from the festival.

Catch your waves on Lucifer's beach...

On Tuesday night, the Dipper and Chadrico were fortunate to catch a special MMJ show at The Village recording studio. It was like having a stadium show in your living room.

Dia de Los Padres
An excerpt from the annals of T.I.P.R. and a belated Happy Father's Day to the Father Cobbs out there... Here is the Father's Day cover of the P.R. Daily Sun. The caption reads, "Children give a Father's Day greeting to their father, incarcerated in the U.S. Federal Prison in Guaynabo." It's worth noting that these girls are standing on the side of PR's busiest highway. Oh, la isla del encanto!

A Tale of Two Ponys
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of death working, it was the age of cobbing, it was the epoch of strength, it was the epoch of weakness, it was the season of surfing, it was the season of getting shized out, it was the spring of sunny weather, it was the winter of fog & rain, we were ETN compliant, it was never again, we were all going directly to Tanuary, we were all going directly our separate ways.
Our story begins with our original Pony under a dark cloud, literally and figuratively, while getting shized out due to a fat high tide. Laguna's high tide breaks were searched to no avail. Breakfast at the OI was small consolation. At least some cobbing was done.Later that day things took a turn for the better, when donning the official LR40 Tanuary uniform in preparation for a reunion with the other Pony for a Umphrey's McGee show.
Rico headed north, grabbed the Big Dipper and headed out for sushi prior to hitting the HOB for the Umphrey's show. UM sold the place out and rocked the house on a raucous St. Patty's Day night.
Pony2's determination & stoke resulted in a few successful rides and a significant advancement of his skillz. Thirty minutes into our session, the original Pony arrived and joined in the fun.
It was more than a meeting of names, it was a meeting of minds. As the saying goes, "Keep Cobbing and good things will happen!"

The 10'6" was waxed, finned and surfed for the first time. The second session, during the evening glass-off, provided a glimpse into the board's potential.

Counterpoint
Some argue that there has never been a better time to live in LA. There's a strong case to be made and a lot of J to be found. At the same time, others might argue for someplace else where the water is still 80 degrees. Week two of a log alert that, so far, has gone largely unreported. Shhhh!

Chadrico makes his debut on Fox News

Obama made a great call yesterday when he decided to prohibit new offshore drilling in continental US waters (about time!). Detail on decision can be found here.
Not surprisingly, Fox News isn't thrilled with the decision and they asked me what we thought of the decision. Here's the clip.

Tan Bald Guy Talks to Pale Guy with Great Hair

If you have a minute this interview is worth listening to. I was surprised to here Slater on the Dan Patrick show, but the interview is great. Pay close attention to when he starts discussing some small waves that he was surfing a few days before the interview.
