It's not every day that an agency's work gets the attention of both the Vatican and the White House.

But it happened to 72andSunny in November, when client Benetton unveiled its arresting "Unhate" campaign featuring images of world leaders known for their tense relationships smooching passionately. Among them was Pope Benedict kissing a Muslim cleric and President Barack Obama locking lips with Venezula's Hugo Chavez.
As intended, the ads sparked debate, even outrage, among world leaders in Washington and Rome. They also reversed a trend of dwindling relevance for Benetton, which has built its brand on espousing ideals like peace and tolerance, and got people talking about the Italian retailer again.

"The most valuable thing you can do in marketing is get your clients and brands into a cultural conversation," said Matt Jarvis, partner and chief strategy officer at Los Angeles-based 72andSunny. "We're not the only people doing it, but I think we're particularly good at it."

Could The Shize Be On - Part 1

What will La Pinche Niña mean for cobbs around the globe?  In this post, we will explore the potential impact of the nasty niña on loggers trying to charge in the Caribbean.

First, what is La Niña? La Niña is defined as cooler than normal sea-surface temperatures in the central and eastern tropical Pacific ocean that impact global weather patterns. La Niña conditions recur every few years and can persist for as long as two years. 




While loggers located at Lat: 18.3427  Long: 67.2504 have been seen charging on their longboards this fall, one must wonder what winter has in store for logging cobbs en el Caribe.

What may happen...

Changes in the storm track over the eastern US and western Atlantic during a La Niña event will have a significant impact on the surf outlook for the region during the winter of 2011-2012.

As shown above, the typical storm track is both further north and displaced from the Gulf Coast/East Coast to the Great Lakes region during La Niña winters when compared to El Niño events. This will result in fewer and weaker NW swell events for the Caribbean over the coming months according to Surfline. 

There are several factors that play into the strength of trade winds over the Caribbean, but it appears we will again see moderate to strong trade winds impact the region through the winter months.  More wind & less surf.  Hmmm.  So much for the glass!

We should also be keeping an eye on the far north Atlantic, as there is some indication that we may see an increase in storm activity during the winter months due to the ongoing La Niña event. Swell activity in the north Atlantic would send down occasional longer period NNE/NE swells to the Caribbean. The best place to take advantage of those swells will be at the spots that can handle the typical wintertime ENE trade winds.  In other words, see you in Rincón.

So, how does one combat La Niña?  It's easy...

Yesterday, November 29th a surprise log alert was issued at Church.

Thanks to a benevolent friend I was alerted that Church looked pretty good. I called a lunch time audible and headed down to find Church just about as good as it gets.

A dream was fulfilled last night. Finally, after an 8 year jones I was able to catch the Fruit Bats for an absolutely death raging show at the Troubador. Great crowd, heavy magnification and awesome music. At the last minute I was joined by a very Stokes Josh Berger.

Somes cobbs and a couple of their respective whips and a bromantic date had the pleasure of witnessing Portugal. The man jam out a great set at the Avalon that left us wanting more. A few wisely cashed it in while others headed off in search of a deeper rage, which was a bust.

As the sun set last night, there was no telling what the morning might bring...

When morning broke, the Cranberry Stick was waxed and ready.

And a quick look revealed some waves starting to line up at the point.

3 hours of overhead lined up walls running down the reef from the rock all the way to the pistons with hardly a soul and no other loggers for the first half of the session. Long, long, long noserides intermixed with the occasional and inadvertent cover up including an accidental double b.

After a great 2 hour session of some real bombs (note: the big set waves here usually break inside that outer reef that this wave is breaking over) I got caught inside the bay and when attempting to duck dive a close out my board was ripped from my hands & my leash snapped. After getting sucked south and out again by a rip and after a 10 wave set, I finally swam in to find my board broken into a dozen pieces. The inside waves breaking against the rocks were so vicious I couldn't even recover the broken pieces. RIP 5'8" Pod.

Irene Wreaks Havoc on Plans

What was supposed to be a one night visit, turned into a 4 day ordeal as Hurricane Irene formed over Vieques and left the roads of la Isla Nena impassable, the faucets dry and the lights off. By Monday, there wasn't even any ice left to keep the Medallas cold and all flight plans had to be delayed. Now that order is restoring on the islands, we must see where Irene lands next before making a new flight plan. But we will fly before too long.
