Irene Wreaks Havoc on Plans

What was supposed to be a one night visit, turned into a 4 day ordeal as Hurricane Irene formed over Vieques and left the roads of la Isla Nena impassable, the faucets dry and the lights off. By Monday, there wasn't even any ice left to keep the Medallas cold and all flight plans had to be delayed. Now that order is restoring on the islands, we must see where Irene lands next before making a new flight plan. But we will fly before too long.

Translation - fashionistas have taken to surfing.

"When New York City surfers cross paths, they greet one another, exchange notes...Anyone who has surfed in Santa Cruz or Huntington Beach — chilly, xenophobic “surf cities” — knows how exceptional this urban aloha is."

Translation - my NY surfing fashionista friends are nice to me. Since we don't live by the beach, we clue each other in to where the surf is on LI. When I travel, nobody dials me in to their local spots.

"The corporate siren song threatens to sour the mood of surfing in New York, which for the moment remains a bastion of surf spirit."

Umm, has this guy been to Montauk??? Has he seen the proliferation of coffee table surf books? The Surf Lodge? The battle for the DitchWitch? What about the Quiksilver store in Times Square?

"It’s not hard to imagine New York’s urban aloha going the way of its Polynesian progenitor, but for the moment a genial, just-folks atmosphere reigns."

A Tale of Two Ponys

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of death working, it was the age of cobbing, it was the epoch of strength, it was the epoch of weakness, it was the season of surfing, it was the season of getting shized out, it was the spring of sunny weather, it was the winter of fog & rain, we were ETN compliant, it was never again, we were all going directly to Tanuary, we were all going directly our separate ways.

Our story begins with our original Pony under a dark cloud, literally and figuratively, while getting shized out due to a fat high tide. Laguna's high tide breaks were searched to no avail. Breakfast at the OI was small consolation. At least some cobbing was done.

Later that day things took a turn for the better, when donning the official LR40 Tanuary uniform in preparation for a reunion with the other Pony for a Umphrey's McGee show.


Rico headed north, grabbed the Big Dipper and headed out for sushi prior to hitting the HOB for the Umphrey's show. UM sold the place out and rocked the house on a raucous St. Patty's Day night.

The Dipper & Rico enjoyed the backstage rage and meeting Pony2's home town crew. After a late nights journey back to Laguna, Pony2 and Rico headed down to Sano for some sunny Spring waves on a beautiful morning.

Pony2's determination & stoke resulted in a few successful rides and a significant advancement of his skillz. Thirty minutes into our session, the original Pony arrived and joined in the fun.

It was more than a meeting of names, it was a meeting of minds. As the saying goes, "Keep Cobbing and good things will happen!"

I was struck by this forecast, there must be subtle differences in the shizer the Pacific Ocean is coughing up that only really dedicated surf forecasters can discern. For instance Flat, Very Poor, Poor to Fair and Poor all seem like shizer, but maybe there are subtle differences in what type of board you would take out…maybe?

Logger eyes out Cali -almost

Thank God I was there... It was a beautiful Fall morning. Air temp 60s, water temp 60s and there appeared to be a log alert going on at El Porto in waist-3rd rib surf, unfortunately no photo was taken. After complaining for about 30 minutes consecutively Leon declared that he was not going to Surf in California this winter! I begged him that this was extreme and tried to convince him that people love surfing Cali in the winter and that with some adaptive equipment including a hood, gloves, booties and a 5/4, and Vaseline for his face he may be able to once again enjoy the glory that is California in the Fall! Likely dx FVS
Frozen Vagina Syndrome. Hopefully, he'll recover.

I just finished a 4 hour session at Dume with my neighbor. For the first hour we were the only ones out...until Laird paddled out and started dominating! That spot is pretty epic, and according to the guy I was surfing with some of the crotchett is gone, and has been replaced with families and overweight surfing professionals. All and all, A+ session

Buoy, Oh Buoy! This is Swell!

After years of virtual buoys and eye-balled surf sizing, Puerto Rico's North Shore is finally getting a buoy that will provide actual real-time wave data. This info should prove useful not only for forecasting, but also to figure out which spots might work best for a given swell. I guess it's time to dust off the wave log and start recording swell height, period and direction on those epic days.

A big shout out to Dr. Miguel Canals for bringing a surfer's perspective to this effort.

To make things even better, Canals is feng shui-ing a buoy off-shore of Rincón. It should be in place around Halloween. That's some seriously localized swell info on the horizon.

Some ridiculous board riding from one of the masters of glide. The video title is a bit mysterious as even a French surf check would be unlikely to cover the distance from Lafiténia to J Bay. Then again...

The decline of western civilization... or at least Point Dume

Native Point Dume surfer and author Katie Arnoldi has watched her beachfront community turn from rural, board-and-batten enclave to haute bourgeois beach club, filled with yoga moms on SUPS. She is not amused.

Her latest novel, Point Dume, is a study of the place she knows like few others. She skewers a variety of Malibu archetypes, but saves much of her venom for the despoliation of the coastal foothills at the hands of Mexican drug cartels and residential developers.



Sounds like this could provide some insight into the step behavior found in and around Malibu. Then again, it could just be sour grapes. Probably worth eyeing.
